Writing the Word: My Review of the NKJV New Testament, Tracing Edition

For the past year, I’ve been writing and journaling Scripture almost every day. What began as a simple spiritual discipline has become one of the most meaningful practices in my walk with God. There’s something about slowing down enough to write the Word—letting each phrase pass through your mind, your hand, and your heart—that creates a deeper connection than reading alone.

So, when I received the NKJV New Testament, Tracing Edition, I knew immediately that this Bible was created for people who want to engage Scripture with intention, presence, and a pen in hand.

And honestly? It’s one of the best tools I’ve ever used for spiritual formation.

A Bible Designed for Slowing Down and Paying Attention

This Tracing Edition is beautifully and thoughtfully crafted. The entire New Testament is printed in a soft gray scale with lightly printed text designed specifically for tracing. The moment you open it, you can tell it was created for a unique devotional experience—one that invites you to linger, breathe, and write God’s Word verse by verse.

A few features immediately stood out to me:

And, perhaps, my favorite feature of all is that this journal lies completely flat. The unique lay‑flat spine design makes tracing comfortable whether you’re right‑ or left‑handed. No wrestling with pages. No awkward angles. Just a smooth, peaceful writing experience.

Why Tracing Scripture Matters

For years, scientists have connected handwriting with improved learning and memory. Writing forces the brain to slow down and process information more deeply, which is exactly what we want when engaging Scripture.

When you trace the Word:

  • Familiarity with Scripture deepens
  • Your mind stays focused
  • Your heart becomes more attentive
  • You remember what you write
  • You create a physical record of your spiritual journey

Writing Scripture has helped me implant God’s Word into my heart in a way I didn’t expect. It’s meditation without pressure. Bible memory without flashcards. Discipleship through the slow, sacred act of writing.

And it’s an excellent activity to do with your family—kids, teens, or anyone who benefits from hands‑on learning.

A Tool for Anyone Who Wants to Go Deeper

Whether you’re new to Scripture writing or you’ve been journaling for years, this Tracing Edition is accessible, inviting, and beautifully made. It’s the kind of Bible that doesn’t just sit on a shelf. It becomes part of your daily rhythm.

If you want to:

  • Build a deeper connection with Scripture
  • Strengthen your Bible memory
  • Create a more reflective devotional practice
  • Engage your family in the Word
  • Slow down and pay attention

…this Bible is a wonderful place to start.
