When Creativity Grows the Same Way Healing Does

healing

Nine months ago, I sat down with my tablet and drew a simple figure sitting cross‑legged in the grass. The legs were rounded and almost cartoon‑soft. The posture was a little stiff, and the proportions seemed a little uncertain. At the time, I didn’t think much about it. It was simply what I could draw because it was what my mind could form, my hands understood, and what my heart was able to hold.

Looking back on it now, I see so clearly that drawing was a snapshot of my emotional landscape at the time.

It wasn’t just a figure sitting on the ground. It was me — tentative and gentle. Trying to settle into myself, but not feeling fully grounded yet. The softness of the lines mirrored the softness of my own boundaries. The simplified anatomy reflected how I was still simplifying my own story. Still rounding off the edges of truths I wasn’t ready to face.

Creativity has a way of telling the truth for us before we’re ready to speak it. That’s why art therapy can be so effective when used with children.

The Second Drawing: A Quiet Shift

Fast forward nine months. I redrew the same pose. Same figure. Same posture. Same quiet moment. But this time, something was different.

The legs settled naturally. The weight distribution made sense. The torso felt centered and at ease. The figure looked like she belonged in her own body. Not just technically better. But emotionally better.

This new version didn’t feel so tentative. It was more present. Grounded. Honest. There was a quiet confidence in the way the figure sat. Not flashy or loud, but unmistakably there.

And as soon as I finished it, I felt the parallel rise up in me like a warm wave:

My art had grown because I had grown.

Creativity and Healing Move Together

We often talk about creativity as a skill. Something you practice, refine, and improve. But creativity is also a mirror. It reflects our internal world with surprising accuracy.

When I drew the first version, I wasn’t ready for certain revelations. I wasn’t ready to sit with deeper truths. I wasn’t ready to hold the emotional weight of what healing would require.

So my art didn’t hold it either.

But over these past months, I’ve been doing the slow, sacred work of healing. The kind that doesn’t announce itself, but it happens in quiet rooms and honest prayers and small, brave steps forward. And as my soul started making space for new understanding, my hands made space for new expression.

The second drawing wasn’t just an improvement. It was evidence that I’m settling into myself. Learning to stay present. That I’m ready for what I wasn’t ready for before.

Healing doesn’t always show up in journal entries or conversations. Sometimes it shows up in the way you draw a leg. Or the way you shade a sky. Or the way your lines lose their unsteady tremble.

The Art We Make in Each Season

If you’re in a season where your work feels simple, shaky, or unfinished, that’s not a failure. It’s a reflection of where you are. And that’s sacred.

The art you make today is not meant to be the same as the art you’ll create nine months from now. It’s meant to be enough for this moment. Honest enough to express what your soul can hold right now.

When you grow, your creativity will grow with you.

And when you’re ready for deeper truths, your art will reveal them. When you’re ready for new emotional ground, your lines will steady. When you’re ready to sit fully in yourself, your figures will sit firmly too.

Healing and creativity are companions. They walk together, learn together, and grow and bloom together.

A Final Thought

I didn’t know nine months ago that I was drawing a version of myself. I didn’t know that the rounded legs and simplified posture were quietly telling the truth about where I was emotionally.

Now, I can see it clearly.

And I’m grateful. Not just for the artistic improvement, but for the journey between the two drawings. The healing that happened in the space between the lines. The courage that grew in the stillness. The readiness that finally arrived glowing on the page.

If you’re on a healing or artistic journey, take heart. Especially if you’re moving through both at the same time, as I am. Your hands will draw what your soul is ready for. And when your soul is ready for more, your art will show you.
