TLDR: God hears your prayers when they come from a humble, teachable heart. Not when you say the perfect words. Daniel 10:12 shows that God responds to those who seek understanding and surrender.
There’s a quiet fear many believers carry but rarely speak aloud: “I don’t think God hears me.” Have you heard someone say that before? Do these words resonate because you feel like God doesn’t hear your prayers?
We don’t usually admit it in church. We don’t confess it in small groups. But the truth of it sits there underneath unanswered prayers, long seasons of silence, and the ache of wanting God to respond but not knowing how to reach Him.
Into that fear, Scripture offers a tender reassurance.
In Daniel 10:12, the prophet sees a vision, in which a messenger from heaven says:
“Since the first day you began to pray for understanding and to humble yourself before your God, your request has been heard in heaven.”
The messenger essentially tells Daniel:
“You were heard the moment you opened your mouth.”
Not because Daniel prayed perfectly. Not because he used the right words. Not because he was spiritually impressive – although, as the rest of his book indicates, he certainly was that
Daniel’s prayers were heard because of his posture before God and the nature of the request. First, he humbled himself before God. He laid down his desire for self‑reliance and opened himself to God’s shaping. Second, he prayed for understanding. Like Solomon before him, Daniel was seeking God’s wisdom, not demanding an outcome.
These two movements — choosing humility and seeking to understand God’s heart — are what make prayer hearable. You don’t need to shout louder or talk longer. You don’t have to shed tears, but you certainly can if the Spirit moves.
You just need a heart that says: “Lord, teach me. Lead me. I don’t know everything, but I want to understand Your way.”
When Prayer Feels Unheard
When you believe God doesn’t hear you, or you wonder whether He does, prayer becomes performance. You try harder. Talk more. Or, alternatively, you might stay quiet under you find just the “right” phrasing. You worry that you’re doing it wrong.
The messenger’s word to Daniel dismantles all of that. And it’s the same word God wants us to hear today.
He is not moved by performance. Not yours or anyone else’s. He is moved by posture. From God’s heavenly throne, a humble heart is loud. A seeking heart is clear. A teachable heart is welcome.
If you’ve been wondering why your prayers feel unheard, maybe the question isn’t: “How do I pray better?” Maybe it’s: “How do I come before God in a way that opens me to His voice?”
Scripture answers gently: Come humbly to seek understanding. Come willing to be shaped.
A Prayer to Practice
Today, right now, try praying this prayer with me, and see if you don’t feel God’s quiet nudge of affirmation, telling you that He hears you, He loves you, and He is already moving to make you more of who He wants you to be.
Here’s a good place to start: “Father, I don’t come with answers. I come with need. Teach me. Search me. Shape me. I humble myself before You. I want Your wisdom more than my own way. Amen.”
This is the kind of prayer God hears. God hears the prayer that comes from humility and the desire to understand His ways. Not because the prayer is perfect, but because it’s honest. And God desires truth in our innermost being (Psalm 51:6). All good relationships are based on honest, open communication.
Daniel had that sort of relationship with God, and that was why heaven responded to his prayers. It will do the same for you.
